Salt Lake City is the state capital of Utah and it is also the most populous city in Utah. As of 2006 Salt Lake City had a population of 178,858 and Salt Lake City metropolitan has a total estimated population of over 1 million residents.
History of Salt Lake City :
The city was founded in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by their prophet Brigham Young. Salt Lake City did not take off though until the mining booms and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. The first transcontinental railroad brought in many people from the east and was soon given the nickname Crossroads of the West. The population has continued to boom until around the 20th century. The population has now started to shift towards the suburban areas north and south of the city.
Today the city still has a booming economy. With major industries in the government, trade, transportation, utilities, and professional and business services. Salt Lake City is known to be home to the vast majority of commercially-owned banks including: e-Bay, Unisys, Siebel, Micron, L-3 Communications and 3M. Salt Lake city was also home to the 2002 Winter Olympics. Since the 2002 Winter Olympics Salt Lake City has seen a great increase in tourism to the area.
