Rhode Island is the smallest United States state by
area. Rhode Island is the official name for Aquidneck
Island which is now the city of Newport. Rhode Island
was the first of the thirteenth original American
colonies to declare independence from British rule and
the last to ratify the United States Constitution. The
nickname for Rhode Island is "Little Rhody" since it is
so small. One tenth of the island is covered in salt
water and no part of the state is no more than 30 minute
drive from the water's edge.
